SLIME 101

What is slime?

Let’s talk science! Slime is all about POLYMERS! A polymer is made up of very large chains of molecules. A chemical reaction occurs between the PVA glue (Polyvinyl acetate) and the borax slime activator (Sodium tetraborate decahydrate) when fully combined. SLIME is the new substance formed.

Instead of flowing freely as before, the molecules in the mixture have become tangled and create what is known as slime. Slime can then be mixed with other ingredients to create different sensory experiences. Including different colouring, pigments, fragrance oils, soft clays, sprinkles, crunchy add in’s, fimo slices and more!

Slime is NOT edible. Although some look shockingly delicious, smell amazing and could be themed around food and yummy treats. The primary ingredients in slime are non-toxic PVA school glue & diluted borax solution, and can also contain other ingredients listed above.

Slime history?

SLIME, originally called GAK or FLUBBER, is a toy that was manufactured by leading retailer Mattel in 1976. As the name implies, it was designed to be GROSS with a sickly green, glossy shine and cold, slimy feel to it that would ooze all over the place. The product even came sealed in a mini green plastic "trash can".

Slime became even more popular after Nickelodeon, a popular TV Network for kids, started featuring it on its shows. On the 1979 TV show "You Can't Do That", if someone said "I don't know," a bucket of green slime would be dumped on them. It was later used on many of their game shows, like 1986’s "Double Dare" where contestants would compete on an obstacle course to get their "reward" if they won, which was a huge bucket of slime dropped on their heads! Even at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, where winning celebrities get slimed on!

What is ASMR?

ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, a relaxing sensation often described as a tingling feeling that begins around the scalp and moves down the neck and body, however this differs for each person. Many people experience ASMR through certain sounds, visuals, or repetitive actions that create a calming and satisfying response.

Over the years, ASMR has become a huge worldwide phenomenon across platforms like Youtube, Tiktok, and Instagram, with millions of people watching videos to relax, sleep, reduce stress, or simply enjoy the sensory experience.

While slime videos are one of the most popular forms of ASMR thanks to their crunchy, stretchy, and squishy sounds, and stunning visuals, ASMR content also includes whispering, tapping, keyboard typing, soap cutting, makeup videos, eating, painting, cooking sounds, and even satisfying power washing videos.

Whether you experience ASMR yourself or simply enjoy satisfying sounds and visuals, slime is one of the most interactive and fun ways to explore the sensory world of ASMR firsthand.
